What do you think of this? If you're intrigued keep reading. If not; Move along folks. Nothing to see here. Fork to a New Topic We have the cool feature that let us fork a post to a new topic. and the post then gets a tag like this. The Problem But people will often reply to the post anyway - and that just makes things difficult. I just did this. When you click the Read More button it returns to To make this happen. Edit the forked post Edit the post Source Code Add the highlighted text...

Hi all, Not urgent at all. My community is going to stick with only supporting like reactions. I would like to change the emoji to thumbs up. But when I add my CSS, I get this error. "Your request contains invalid 4-byte characters (e.g. Emoji characters). Please go back, remove those special characters, and try your request again." Is there any way around this? Here is my code /*Love Icon*/ .emoji { visibility: hidden; position: relative; } .emoji:after { visibility: visible; position:...

Hey everyone- We've made a couple of changes to the way that our customer support system works. 1. All customer support tickets are now always private. That means that only the person that created the ticket and our support staff can see each ticket. This way, no one ever has to worry about private details about their sites being made visible to the world. 2. Because those customer support tickets are always private now, we disabled the "suggestions" option in the Customer Support area.

I would like to commend you for the spirit of your efforts. Hopefully, your smaller payroll will allow you to make this system work. But for most corporations, I firmly believe this approach would be doomed to failure. This policy will turn into a nightmare for any who would rebel against the oppression seen in corporations who create policies based on the performance of the LCD. The standard will be set not by "Disciplined people who engage in disciplined thought and who take disciplined...

Great article, Rosemary! I'd just add this: to 1. - No matter HOW you define success, your community must be visible in order to be successful. I've seen too many people hide their communities so that it takes a trail of breadcrumbs and a jungle machete to find it. to 2. - Completely agree that these are questions that are best answered before you start. We've seen a number of communities try to set up "premium features" on formerly-free features.

Hello, Bear with me as I am totally new to this arena and will likely ask some very, very face-palm-worthy questions! I am building a unique health-based community in the hunting and fishing space, and am curious as to what your experiences have been with recruiting beta testers for your communities. My goals are as follows: 1) Get a solid sample of users for feedback regarding site layout and navigation 2) Get a a meaningful of sample traffic for behavior analysis, growth estimates, etc. to...

As I told in the "What would you like us to do next"? survey last month, a webspace manager is just what I was looking for. Amazing to see it implemented so quickly!

Hi, DBenoit. Thanks for giving us some more information about you and your goals in your profile . From your profile What's your community's big goal? The goal of this community is to foster the exchange of experiences, issues, information, and inspiration toward overcoming personal health challenges in the hunting and fishing communities. Have you found any places (physical or virtual) where like-minded people congregate? I'm picking up on Rosemary's thoughts about brick and mortar...

Hi, I'm especially excited about the photo change. Thanks! I did, though, have two questions about the personalized activity stream. I had an activity stream on my home page (Member Milestones and More!), but I don't see a way to personalize it (see screen shot below). Why not? And, two, I don't understand this comment, "In addition, there is a new Personal Activity Stream page available whenever the Activity Stream is enabled for your site." (1) How do you enable the Activity Stream (I...

Lighting a candle for the dearly departed Activity Stream There are certain things about you that will be missed: 1. You announced New Premium Members and Newly Registered Members. You were a not-so-subtle encouragement to get others to "join in" too. You gave instant recognition to newbies. You gave community leaders a convenient place to see and follow up on newbies listed there. ( Where do they go now? ) You were a visible way to generate a sense of "community" -- which is something that...

Hi, Derek! You can create an Automation Rule that comps them a Premium Membership based on their response to a profile field: 1. In Automation Rules, add a new Rule, and give it a name ("Comp Premium Membership for Retired Members", for instance). 2. The Trigger will be "Member Registers". 3. For Condition, choose Profile File Field Value, and then scroll to the appropriate listed field (you can choose more than one value, so here's your chance to choose both "Retired" and "Disabled" if...

Think of RAID this way: You have a 3 disk drive RAID array. Using your vinyl record example, we'll consider each vinyl record on it's own LP player as a disk drive. Now our records can only be played at single speed, i.e.: audio speed. That's what we call the RPM, or the speed of the spindle. This means for a 6 minute song, if we stored it on one of our records, it would take us 6 minutes to listen to the entire song. It is not possible for us to play it any faster. The limitation of our...

Hi Rich. Please post your site's url. topic-list-box needs "padding" inside the container: Here's what we're using: .h-ubb-topic-list-box { background-color:#DEDFE0; border:1px solid #DEDFE0; padding:10px; } The How-to: I turn on Chrome's built in "Inspector" to view the CSS which is controlling whatever element I've highlighted on the webpage. (I place my cursor over the element on the site, then right click and select "inspector). Up pops a window with the html and the css source which I...

Hi Lynda- Your site will be set up on our upgrade/beta server around the end of August, assuming current projections hold up. While on that server, you will be able to create new theme(s) and change other settings so you can see what your site looks like on the new codebase. Then, once that "upgrade/beta" period ends, we will start the process of upgrading all live sites to the new codebase (and we will bring over all new themes/settings you set on that beta/upgrade server over automatically...

Brian, it warms my heart to see someone like you, who is very knowledgeable about the tech side of things on the internet, and who is much younger than I am, do something like this. The issues you raised are spot on and have motivated me to do the same thing. I got a Faceplant page about 2 years ago solely for family purposes. I think I have 8 "friends." My daughter was posting pics of the grandkids there at the time. However, due to the privacy concerns you linked to in your post, she has...

Ok, interesting idea....I've got a couple of possible solutions. 1. Create a "Best of" forum (and don't allow regular members to post or comment in it). Move your "best" topics to that forum. Create a Content Block for that forum and put it on the home page. 2. Create a Custom HTML content block (one time) that contains 3-5 bullet point links and nicely formatted text paragraph (or sentence). On a weekly, monthly, or other basis, just replace the links and paragraphs with the new topics you...

Wow congrats @Rich Melvin that's amazing! For those looking on in awe, thinking about how to make a similarly strong community, h ere are a few key lessons we might draw: 1. The topic was originated by a member (cool) 2. It's an easy to answer question...lots of members will have a ready response 3. It includes "insider" wording...if you know what a "layout" is, you're on the inside 4. It has a timeframe, today, which makes it automatically a recurring thought Do you have a mega thread in...
