    That was a generous offer in my email Rosemary, of "one of the coolest, most challenging jobs on earth".(In the email that was sent to everyone who has a watch on Social Strata I would guess). Not sure I can fit in the post of 'community manager' in as I am a full time grandparent these days and looking after my kids is far and away more preferable than a similar job on the UK Big Brother forum.......... Good luck though

    Thanks JC, we'll look into that bug... Little did I know that the way I chose to start this blog entry would confuse so many people! Sorry about that... We're also dealing with a possible notification glitch that sent email notices to a much larger group than it should have.     This gave me a lot to think about - thanks Rosemary! My problem is that I am looking for something specific.... farmers and gardeners that are from Vermont. But, figuring that any exposure is good exposure, I created a Squidoo lense that's a near copy of a blog post I made as well as created a new board on Pinterest (I love Pinterest anyway so this comes easy).     LOL, but breakfast is usually something "instant." It makes everything so much more fun when we get to know our customers and they become friends. Makes me want to get up at 6am When are you coming back to visit us in the States again? I use my email inbox as a "to do" list. First run through and delete all of the spam (even with filtering, there's a lot). Then respond to the quick items, then go top to bottom for the longer responses. Then read the blogs, deleting the ones I don't need to...

    Well visiting America/Seattle depends on Elizabeths recovery from this Pemphigoid condition. It is so sensitive that we fear a prolonged flight may antagonise it. However people are supposed to recover so we will see. We would love to Amtrak it from Chicago to Seattle have va few days with you lot again then go back via a different route. Probably expensive but worth it.

    I think there's still a place for a little bit of Stalin. Ok, maybe not in the arena of criticism, and some controversy is always going to happen. I've had to perform one execution as a moderator and I've never regretted the decision, though with different tools and more experience I might have been able to find a better way (though I still doubt it). Other than that, I guess I'm bits of all of these - if I had to pick one, I'm more of a border collie, but without the idea of the "correct"...

    Nice article. Too bad CareerStep's Hoopla site is a private community. I would have liked to have seen the 6 year game of "The Person Below Me." Would have also liked to be able to look at another successful community, you know, to learn something to try at our community.

    Excellent description of the differences. I think perhaps an online community can also be more theme oriented, right? A mission, cause, program, objective or some such?     Here are a few more enhancements that were included in this release: We fixed the pagination bug for dialogs and clip sets. In the content management area of the control panel, we added some new search parameters. You can now find clips that have no clip set, or blogs that have no collection, and search for content that is either featured or not featured. There were other behind-the-scenes bug fixes and updates, but nothing else that affects the feature set.

    Community building is a challenge for many...whether you're a blogger or apparently a chicken farmerette. It's been suggested to me I'm a natural at building community; not exactly sure why...perhaps the natural ebullience? HEH. Had to use that word. I like this post. Short and to the point.

    200 members is great but how many are free and how many are paying? What business model was used as far as pricing was concerned? The standard $25 a year? Or a larger monthly fee etc? I never watched the video, so sorry if it is mentioned there - 3am here I am too tired.

    Hey Danny! I just thought I'd pipe in on this as I got the email notification that you'd responded. The video is before I had set up premium memberships and more focuses on things that I had learned about bringing new members to the site in only a couple of months and keeping them engaged. I've since set it up and do have maybe 5 paying members currently (at the standard annual rate) but I really operate the site for the love of sharing my interests with others and learning from one another...

    I know this is old but it caught my eye (well both of them actually. My take on this is, you do indeed tread a fine line between creating the right kind of platform for a community. Engaging them in the creation is one way. Allowing people to have their input is very good but everyone has a different opinion so you have to start with an adaptive base.     I use groups in my choir community so that smaller working groups (committees) have a place to work that is apart from the main community. These little dedicated areas allow Production, Promotion, and Fundraising committees to do their work and keep their documents in a separate place, so they can maintain focus without the distraction of the main community activity.
