So....you can have all sorts of custom widgets in Hoop.la, but what to put in them?  Yes, you can go with the standard Google ads, but how about pulling in some interesting info from across the web?

You don't need to be a code jockey to use these, either.  Most sites provide cut-and-paste code that you can place directly into Hoop.la's "create custom widget" popup.  Just go to the page you want to place the widget on, click the "add widget..." link, and then choose "create new custom widget."  Paste the code, and you're done.  The new widget can be dragged into position by hovering over it and grabbing the blue arrows.

Here are some ideas and resources:

  • Check your favorite social network for badges and widgets (let your fingers do the Googling).  For example, here's the Empire Ave badge creator: http://apidocs.empireavenue.com/badge.
  • Visit http://www.widgetbox.com.  They have free and paid customizable widgets in a variety of styles.  Includes social feeds, slideshows, countdowns, and more.
  • Promote your favorite charity.  Many non-profits and charities have pre-made badges or widgets you can place on your page. (Below is a widget from Be The Match, for bone marrow donation.)Screen Shot 2012-03-13 at 9.05.40 AM
  • Go advanced with Hoop.la's existing Twitter widget.  Did you know that you can use our pre-made Twitter widget to just show the feed from a specific list or hashtag?
Another little-known trick is that you can have multiple instances of the same type of widget.  For example, you can have one Twitter widget that shows your own stream, and another Twitter widget that shows posts from a certain hashtag.

The only limitation is your creative juices!  Of course, if you are a code jockey, you can go even farther and write your own widgets.

Do you have a favorite source for widgets or badges?  Please share with us!
