First off, let me be clear, I use pen and paper nearly every day to jot little notes. I have not completely stopped writing. But when I try to write complete sentences now, my handwriting looks like some kind of alien script. And it just feels awkward.
Centuries from now, paleontologists may find it and declare that they have discovered a new language that signaled a turning point in the history of mankind, an evolution if you will. Welcome, homo typulus. A sudden decrease in fine motor skills, an increase in the padding of the fingertips.
As convenient as it is to type now, I can't help feeling a little guilty. All of those years working on penmanship in grade school down the drain. And no matter how personal it might be in content, a typed message will never seem as real as a handwritten note.
I've found that part of my problem is that my hand cannot write fast enough to satisfy my computer-acclimated brain. You have to slow down a bit to write with a pen, but who has time for that?
So does it matter that no one hand-writes anything anymore? Have we lost anything? Could you go a whole day or a whole week putting everything in (hand) writing?
Does good handwriting matter anymore?
