Hi, wondering if there is any scope for adding a 'Merge' or 'Join' threads option in the Manage Topic options?

Have numerous occasions where similar, to the point of being near identical postings, on a subject get posted whenever an occasion pops up where everyone wants to discuss it.

Would be far easier for the community if we were able to pull all the threads into one, instead of closing topics or deleting posts which usually results in annoying the contributors, which of course is the last thing we want to do.

Thoughts?

There is already a merge topic feature in Eve Community.

Go to any topic. Click the Admin tab. Click Manage Content in This Topic. At the bottom of the resulting page you will see Move To.  Select any existing topic and the topics will merge.

You will only see options to merge with a topic within the same forum. If you want to merge topics within different forums you'll need to move one of them first.

To be more clear on what Dave posted above.  You will only be able to move messages to one of the 200 (I believe, this number may be a bit off) most recent topics within the forum.  You cannot choose the topic outside of that list.  So if you want to merge into a older topic you will need to bump the topic you want to move into before trying to do the merge.

Just FYI,

Due to the glitch in posts not being sent to a screen that tells them it is awaiting moderation, people are going to blank screens and so they re-post the same post.  This is causing confusion and I am needing to merge threads together.

I tried to find this option above described for Eve Community and did not find it.  Is there a way to get the option for my website too?

Thank you for your reply.

Thank you for your response.  It is actually more complicated than that.  There are responses to the duplicate threads so I am unable to delete.  Also a new member posted a total separate post as a thank you because she could not get the post to go through.  I dont know what happened to her first try.

We will look forward to that feature in the future.

Just ran into a need to merge two topics. Am I missing the location of this feature? Ted's post saying that it should be in the next release was over a year ago so I'm assuming I'm not looking in the right location for merging topics.

Hey Brian, the ETA sounds somewhat vague. Was there a reason why the feature was derailed? Given the demand for merging threads, the consensus that it's "a basic function of any forum software", and Ted's comment there are new features released every month, it appears that this suggestion is 12+ releases overdue.

Can you point me to the release notes section for Hoop.la? I'd like to get a better idea of what features have made it to production vs. those still on the product road map.

Thanks!

Hi Augie,

Yes, the ETA is intentionally vague because it's not scheduled for development at this point in time

There isn't a specific reason that merging topics didn't get implemented. The general reason would be that other development items took priority.

You can read all about the Hoop.la releases here on this site under the Blog tab:

All of the release notes are posted as blog posts.

Still waiting patiently.

I don't know, I think it's more about Hoop.la deciding what their customers need vs. the customers telling them what they need.

I've seen other forum providers with a merge thread feature and as Jeff said it's "a basic function of any forum software". In some ways it seems related to Reply Forking except instead of starting a new topic you place it into an existing one.

IMO/IME having a Suggestion feature that allows customers to vote on the product roadmap isn't a good thing. It can give them a false understanding that if they make a suggestion, garner support for it, get others to vote, etc. that it will make it will be given more attention over other suggestions. Since we migrated to Hoop.la I've got a ton of suggestions but I'm not sure why I bother b/c they're not likely to get the amount of votes that the most popular ones do which have been sitting here for years rather than weeks.
