Over the last few weeks, we've had some inquiries from other companies curious about our policies, and how we arrived at them.  We've done some one-to-one sharing, but I thought it would also be fun to share one of our core documents with everyone.  This statement page is given to every new employee when they receive the policy manual, bathroom key, etc.  I wrote it about ten years ago, and I think it sums up our basic rules pretty well.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
  1. Be honest. With co-workers, customers, or anyone else with whom you are dealing on behalf of the company.
  2. Don't waste time tracking the other guy.  Keep your mind focused on our goals and products.  The other guy can worry about us, if he wants to.
  3. If you break something, fix it. If you can't fix it, find someone who can.
  4. If you don't know the answer, find someone who does.
  5. No whining. This is non-negotiable.
  6. Remember that as far as the client is concerned, you ARE the company.
  7. Don't write anything in an email or say anything on the phone that you wouldn't write or say to your mother.
  8. If you say you're going to do something, do it. If you set a deadline, meet it or explain why you can't.
  9. Spend the largest proportion of your time ensuring that our product is the BEST it can possibly be. The rest will flow from that.
  10. Have fun.  This is also non-negotiable.

Does your company have a philosophy statement?  I'd love to see others!
