The number one complaint among our users is that the "Follow This Topic" box is checked by default. We have lots of frequent posters, who find it annoying that they have to uncheck the box every time they post (or, if they forget, receive unwanted emails).

I have instructed these users to turn off their email notifications, but that turns it off globally, and makes it impossible to get email notifications in the special cases when they actually want them.

We would very much like an option in the admin tool for making that box unchecked by default. Thanks.

Hi Kevin,

This is a feature that has been requested before, as well:

We are currently considering a per-user preference to allow users to specify the default behavior for the "Follow" checkbox (when posting new content and when posting replies/comments). This would not be an administrative option, but rather an option that each user could use to control what their preference is for the default state of the checkbox. These settings would still be enabled by default, but users would have the ability/option to override the behavior via their preference, if they so choose.

Would this approach would suffice for your community (user preference vs. an admin setting, as you've requested)?

Hi Kevin,

You'll be happy to know that in the SEO Ninja Release today we included a new Personal Setting for users to choose if they want the "Follow" checkbox checked by default for new posts and replies that they make. Under Manage -> Your Personal Settings, you should find two new notification options:

- By default, follow content I create for new comments/replies.
- By default, follow content I comment/reply to for new comments/replies.

They are both enabled by default, but users will now have a way to change the default behavior so that the checkbox is un-checked by default if they like.

Hope that helps you and your community!

Brian
